Rusty Visits

To demonstrate the array of businesses and services available to the visitor/residents, I took my dog Rusty on a walk of the island to photograph him with several of the owners and their establishments. Enjoy the slideshow or click on Rusty Visits the Island link at the left to view the images of our walk around island from any page on our site.

Madeline Island

Madeline Island is located 2.6 miles east of Bayfield, Wisconsin and is one of 22 "Apostle" islands found in the southern part of Lake Superior. It can be reached either by boat or ferry. Madeline Island is a cross between Cape Cod and "Northern Exposure" with a little Lake Wobegon thrown in for good measure. This multifaceted island is 14 miles long and can be traversed by auto, rented bike or moped. It consists of beautiful sand beaches, water caves, state and city parks (rent canoes and kayaks or camp), high cliffs and thick forests with hiking paths. Wild life abounds here in all seasons. The island even has a 3,200 foot asphalt airpstrip. During the summer months the population grows to approximately 2,500 but in the winter months when the lake freezes over, 220 hardy souls live on the island and travel the ice to the mainland either by windsled or auto, keeping the heart of the community thriving into the next season.

Madeline Island Ferry

The MI Ferry runs like a Swiss train, carrying passengers, cars, bikes and trucks every 30 minutes or 60 minutes depending on the schedule. Passengers on the ferry can sit on the upper deck and breathe in the fresh lake air while watching the power boats race by and the sailboats gracefully sail to the outer islands.
